Snipe Woodcock Shooting
Snipe and woodcock shooting on South Uist is undoubtably challenging; it is wild, remote and truly unique. Every bird taken on South Uist is most certainly earned.
The secret to good snipe shooting when the western shore of South Uist was drained to make way for farming. South Uists snipe walks are a landscape like no other, flat wetlands that follow the dramatic Atlantic coastline.

The most obvious difference between snipe shooting and most other quarry species is that the line is walked with the wind as the tendency of the snipe is to turn into the breeze rather than vanishing with it. Whisps of twenty or thirty snipe showing over guns is not at all uncommon, and the combination of the two makes for some of the most thrilling experiences the bird shooter can hope for.
Snipe drives will often feature as part of a days sport and can test even the finest shots as the birds jink and dive overhead.

Whilst the conditions and numbers vary from year to year, we have never had a ‘blank’ one and some years have been really outstanding probably as good and memorable as anywhere else in the world.

On South Uist we walk up woodcock with spaniels to flush, labradors retrieving & over pointers. Woodcock are mainly found in heather and bushes on our hills; with beats chosen depending on wind direction and weather conditions.
The day can be a physically challenging walk for teams of between 3-7 guns but extremely scenic and rewarding. On a typical day may flush between 25-35 birds with the bag depending on the accuracy of the guns.

Packages as standard include a 7 night stay at Grogarry Lodge, for a maximum of 8 guns and up to 19 guests. However packages are tailored to your groups exact requirements.
Both our gamekeeping and lodge team are at hand throughout your stay to ensure your guests every needs are met and expectations exceeded.
